The Palestinian-Israeli conflict: ¿have the Oslo Accords died?
On March 8th, 2024, INCIPE held the virtual event entitled The Palestinian-Israeli conflict: ¿have the Oslo Accords died? with the participation of Óscar Mijallo, correspondent at Oriente Próximo of RTVE, and writer. The Ambassador of Spain and Secretary General of INCIPE, Manuel Alabart presented the meeting. The presentation was followed by a round of questions moderated by Vicente Garrido, General Director of INCIPE.
Óscar Mijallo initiated his intervention by explaining the reasons why today’s virtual event was named “the Palestinian-Israeli conflict” and not “the Arab-Israeli conflict”, even when the religious aspect is of such importance in the matter. Nevertheless, he expressed his desire to demonstrate through the title the relevance that nationality has in the conflict, as Hamas defines themselves as the “Palestinian Arabs”. Having explained this, Mijallo continues its presentation through the Oslo Accords, whose inefficacy seems to be showing due to the conflict. He does not waste too much time explaining their foundation basis, but their loss of effectiveness as there is yet to be a Palestinian state.
Furthermore, Mijallo highlights the importance that the Israeli Government holds by explaining what he thinks are the reasons behind their actions and the possible consequences of their decision-making processes. He even points out the punitive nature of its citizens, mentioning how Netanyahu will not come untouched by the conflict. It is also mentioned how Israel is losing support due to recent dubious military decisions, as the hospitals’ destruction in Gaza suggests. Regardless, it is noticeable how this conflict has required other Muslim states to act, which seldom has happened.
On the other hand, Mijallo further explains all the problems that Gaza is facing, emphasizing the geographical aspects. The Gaza Strip seems to be enclosed not only by Israel but also by Egypt.
A discussion took place at the end of the session, in which participants asked questions about the United States’ position on the conflict, the upcoming American elections, and how this might affect their foreign policy. Moreover, Mijallo also answered some questions related to regional governance and Israel’s relationships with other Arab states, as well as the European Union’s position on the aggressions happening in Gaza.
